As a teaching hospital responsible for teaching undergraduate students the art of emergency medicine, we often found that students were waiting in the corridor for “something interesting” to happen, whilst the interesting things were happening right next to them!

They didn’t realise what was interesting, and their clinical exposure was often unstructured.

We created a self directed reflective workbook to help guide them through their ED placement.

It had links to peer reviewed resources (mostly #FOAMEd), hospital guidelines and explanatory text.

As a key feature, it also had guided reflective prompts – like what would you do if you found someone unconscious in the toilet?

Students found the workbooks useful, and we will continue to use them and update them.

The work was presented as a poster for the Emergency Medicine Educators Conference (EMEC 2016).
